Although if your a good golfer a fitted and great set of clubs is a huge asset. If your starting out no need to spend large amounts of money on golf clubs. You can get them used at ebay, or craigslist . Sure they will be a few years old and have a few scuffs on them, but the cost will be really really cheap. And Who knows you might not even like the game.

I will share a little secret with you. This is how I learned that golf clubs really dont mean spit. When I was 19 I played golf for a few years with my dad, uncles and a few friends. Well I started playing more and more so I figured that I might want to improve my game with a golf pro. So I call around and get the local pro at a club close buy. Then the real lessons began

So I show up nice and early, stretch out and clean up my 5 year old clubs. The instructor asks me to hit a few while he watches…. yeah I’m a little nervous. First swing slice, second swing slice , third swing miss, damm I hardly ever miss. So I blame the club (of course) LOL.

The instructor grabs the club and gives me a little “well lets take a look” , Bings one straight as an arrow and about the correct distance for the club. What the ? Here Im thinking I need a new set of shinnies, and master blaster over there hits a perfect one. Lucky is what I said ,,,,,, Practice what I teach you he said,  then you will hit the same way I do.

That was  a good summer, but I grew a bit taller and a bit stronger and the lessons that old feller taught me became obsolete by the time next season rolled around. The point of the story though, Its really you need to be taught how to use the club, then when your good with bad to medium clubs you can get yourself a new basket of frenchfries.

Strange thing is, the only day I remember getting into a great rhythm, and playing a great round of golf was in the pouring rain. Is that odd?  Jeebers

So any way the course kills me this day, and my brother plays a low 80’s round. I figure hes been playing a lot, so he deserves to have a better score then me. Then my mind starts to playing games on me. WTF I am 10 times the athlete then him, I have beat him at anything athletic anytime. So you know whats next, I had to ask….

“Ok Bro, what gives why you playing such a good round of golf”? Answer : ” I made my golf swing more natural” so my retort really, whats that got to do with it? Reply “dude even Tiger has a coach”

The stunning logic of it all, I was aghast, taken back to my tyro football days when all we had to teach us football was retired do good wannabe athletes. Then the questions start to pop up into my head.  ”Where did you get a coach bro?” my brother says “I tried to pay for lessons with the local pro, he was ok, but I needed to practice all the time and he was not around so I taped my golf swing lessons with him and practiced my nuts off” .

Of course this is not what I wanted to hear, I wanted the little green pill, take and shake, call me in the morning and my round of golf will be kicking. Not “work my nuts off”, the 4 letter word that stops most from being a good to great golfer.

So we will start to examine what it takes to get from suck  wanna be to good and shooting par(which is easy) to I can play with some of the best of  em.

Ha hahaahahha . Then why does my club dig up about 3 inchs of dirt every time I swing , except my 3 wood. That club hits em perfect and long.

Ok if  I move the ball ahead a bit. No , humm that did not work. Ok move it back then. Yep that did it , crap only worked for one shot.

Does this self talk all sound familiar ? This is my conversation every time I play golf. Thing is this should be an easy game for an athlete , No ?

Hell No – I think if your a good athlete you figure you can go it alone. Bottom line with golf you need to get jiggy with an instructor, or someone who knows what the hell they are doing. Lessons are criticle in this game , no really
